Introduction
If your refrigerator is leaking water, the most important thing to do first is figure out where the water is coming from. Water under the crisper drawers, water on the floor outside the fridge, water dripping from the ceiling inside the fridge, and water at the dispenser are four completely different problems with different causes and different fixes.
We see all of them regularly across Bridgewater, Raritan, Somerville, and Hillsborough Township — and in most cases the repair is straightforward once the source is correctly identified.
Is It Actually a Leak?
Before anything else — make sure you’re dealing with an actual leak and not condensation. If you recently had a power outage, moved the fridge, or placed a large amount of warm food inside, you may be seeing normal condensation that will clear on its own within 24 hours.
Wipe it dry, wait a day, and see if it returns. If it does, you have a real leak. If it doesn’t, it was likely condensation.

Where Is the Water Coming From?
Why Is Water Pooling Under My Crisper or Vegetable Drawers?
This is the most common refrigerator leak call we get — especially on Samsung and LG French door models. Water pools at the bottom of the fridge compartment, usually behind or under the produce drawers, and homeowners find themselves mopping it up every day.
The cause in the vast majority of cases: a clogged defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, the fridge melts frost off the evaporator coils. That water is supposed to drain through a tube at the back of the freezer compartment down to a drain pan under the fridge where it evaporates. When the drain tube gets clogged — with ice, food debris, or buildup — the water has nowhere to go and eventually flows into the fridge section, pooling under the drawers.
Signs of a clogged defrost drain: water appears consistently under the drawers, there may be a small amount of ice at the bottom of the freezer, and the water often appears overnight when the defrost cycle runs.
Fix: The drain needs to be cleared and flushed. On most models this requires removing the back panel inside the freezer to access the drain opening. This is a professional repair on most modern refrigerators — the drain is not homeowner-accessible on the majority of French door and side-by-side models.
On Samsung specifically: if Energy Saver mode is turned ON, it can cause condensation buildup inside the unit that mimics a drain leak. Go to settings and turn Energy Saver off — if the water stops within 48 hours, that was the cause.
Why Is My Fridge Leaking Near the Water Filter?
On many French door refrigerators — particularly Samsung models — the water filter is housed directly under the crisper drawers. If the filter isn’t seated correctly or has a hairline crack, water drips directly into that area.
Fix: Turn off the water supply to the fridge. Remove the filter, inspect it for damage, and reinstall it firmly until it clicks into place. Turn the water back on and watch for 30 minutes. If the leak stops, the filter was the issue. If it continues, the filter housing itself may be cracked and needs professional repair.
Why Is There Water on the Floor Outside My Refrigerator?
Water appearing on the floor around or behind the fridge points to one of three things:
1. Drain pan overflow or damage. Every refrigerator has a drain pan underneath that collects condensation water. In high humidity — and New Jersey summers are humid — this pan can overflow before the water has time to evaporate. A cracked or damaged pan will drip continuously. Pull the fridge out, locate the drain pan (usually behind a kick panel at the bottom back), inspect it, and empty or replace it.
2. Water supply line leak. If your fridge has a water dispenser or ice maker, it’s connected to your home’s water supply via a plastic or braided line at the back. These connections can loosen over time, or the line itself can develop a small crack. Check the connection at the wall valve and at the back of the fridge. Any dripping or moisture at these points means the line needs tightening or replacing.
3. Refrigerator not leveled correctly. A refrigerator should tilt slightly backward — not be perfectly level front to back. This tilt helps doors close and water drain properly into the pan. If it’s tilted forward, water flows forward and out under the door. Adjust the front legs slightly higher.
Why Is Water Dripping from Inside the Refrigerator Ceiling?
Water dripping from the top of the fridge interior — especially near the back wall — is almost always a defrost system issue. The evaporator coils above are producing more condensation than the drain system can handle, or the drain tube is frozen or blocked at a higher point.
On older Whirlpool and Maytag refrigerators we see this regularly across Raritan and Somerville — a failed defrost heater allows frost to build up on the coils, then during a warmer period it melts all at once and drips down through the interior.
Fix: This requires accessing the evaporator coils to inspect the defrost heater, thermostat, and drain. Professional repair.
Why Is My Water Dispenser or Ice Maker Leaking?
If water drips from the dispenser when you’re not using it, or the ice maker is producing malformed or watery ice, the water inlet valve may be failing — it’s not closing fully between uses and allows water to seep through. The fill tube to the ice maker can also freeze, causing water to back up and overflow.
Fix: A dripping dispenser is usually a failed inlet valve — a $30–60 part that we replace regularly. A frozen fill tube can sometimes be cleared with a hairdryer on low heat, but if it keeps freezing it points to a thermostat or insulation issue that needs professional diagnosis.
Real Case: Samsung French Door Refrigerator in Hillsborough Township, NJ
A few weeks ago we got a call from a homeowner in Hillsborough Township — a newer construction home off Route 206 with a Samsung French door refrigerator about five years old. They’d been finding water pooled under the crisper drawers every single morning for two weeks and had already replaced the water filter twice thinking that was the problem. The leak kept coming back.
Our technician arrived the same day. He removed the back panel inside the freezer and found the defrost drain completely blocked with ice — a frozen plug that had been redirecting all the defrost cycle water into the fridge compartment instead of down to the drain pan. The Energy Saver mode was also on, which was contributing additional condensation.
We cleared the drain, flushed it with warm water, turned off Energy Saver, and ran a test defrost cycle to confirm everything was draining correctly. The leak stopped immediately.
Hillsborough Township homes — especially the newer builds — tend to have high-end Samsung and LG French door refrigerators. This drain issue is one of the most common calls we get from that area.

Frequently Asked Questions — Refrigerator Leaking Water
Why is my refrigerator leaking water under the vegetable drawer?
The most common cause is a clogged defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, water that should drain to the pan underneath the fridge instead backs up and pools under the crisper drawers. On Samsung models, turning off Energy Saver mode can also stop this if condensation is the cause.
Is a refrigerator water leak dangerous?
A small leak won’t damage the fridge immediately, but it will damage your floor over time — especially hardwood or laminate. A water supply line leak can also become a serious water damage issue if the line fails completely. Don’t ignore a persistent leak.
How much does it cost to fix a refrigerator leak in NJ?
Most refrigerator leak repairs in the Bridgewater area run between $80 and $200 for parts and labor. A drain flush or water filter housing repair is on the lower end. A water inlet valve replacement or defrost heater repair runs slightly higher. We always quote before we start.
Can a clogged defrost drain cause a refrigerator to leak?
Yes — it’s actually the most common cause of water pooling inside the fridge, especially under the crisper drawers. When the drain is clogged, defrost water has nowhere to go and flows into the refrigerator compartment instead of the drain pan.
Why does my Samsung fridge keep leaking water under the crisper?
Samsung French door refrigerators are particularly prone to defrost drain clogs. The drain tube can ice over or become clogged with food debris over time. Additionally, Samsung’s Energy Saver mode can cause excess condensation that pools in the same location. Check Energy Saver first — if it’s on, turn it off and wait 48 hours.
Why is there water on the floor behind my refrigerator?
Water on the floor behind the fridge usually means either the drain pan is overflowing or cracked, or the water supply line connection is leaking. Pull the fridge out, check the water line connection at the back, and inspect the drain pan at the bottom. New Jersey humidity in summer can cause the drain pan to overflow faster than normal.
Can I fix a refrigerator water leak myself?
Some fixes are homeowner-friendly: reseating a water filter, tightening a supply line connection, adjusting the leveling legs, and emptying the drain pan. A clogged defrost drain — the most common cause — requires removing the freezer back panel and is best left to a technician on most modern models.
